Designing a blog reading event

What is Blog Reading?

A blog reading is an event where people gather, read selected blog post together, and discuss it.

A typical blog reading flow:

  • Brief introduction
  • Sharing pre-curated blog post and vote on what to read
  • Read the top-voted blog post
  • Discuss until the group wants to move on
  • Move on to new blog post, until time is up
  • It’s like an agile version of book club. No reading commitment required before the event. Instead, participants select what to read together.

Relevant blog selection sets up a perfect stage for insightful conversation.

    How do I moderate it?

I hosted in my first blog reading event back in 2019. It was at a cozy living room and with a group of friends at Minerva. We read articles about Venture Capital, possessions and how to choose a life partner. Despite I was nervous, the group had some good conversation.

I hosted more blog reading events in 2021. In person or virtually on gather.town. As a moderator, I learn some lessons in blog reading :

  • Finding the right people to join is important, right size is 3 - 6 people.
  • Try to encourage less-spoken members to engage in the conversation
  • Write re-cap note for everyone (or as a volunteer to do so)
  • Make it recurrent, ideally twice a month
  • Make it clear how long it’s gonna last
  • Conclusion

So far, it has been a great social event for the curious minds. Would recommend anyone who have the bandwidth to host one!
